How much does it cost?
The shop minimum is $50.00 and all prices are based on a rate of $100.00 per hour. (Lee being the exception at $125.00). All Appointments must be made over the phone (406-728-1191) or in person – sorry no online scheduling.
Deposits are required to make an appointment. $50.00 for anything that will take under 2 hours and $100.00 for anything that will take over two hours. Your artist or one of our skilled front end people will let you know how much time you will need if you are not sure.
For custom drawings, a deposit is required to start the drawing. This deposit is then used as the appointment deposit, and goes toward the price of getting your tattoo. Drawing deposits are $100.00.
Deposits are non-refundable.
Can you handle walk-ins and custom work?
If you are not sure who you would like to make an appointment with, we recommend you stop by the studio.
All artists have portfolios available and many of them contain work that is not posted online. Consultations are free. If the artist is not available while you are there, just make an appointment.
Consultation appointments are usually booked for under a half hour. These short appointments serve as a great time to meet the artist, go over design ideas, discuss concerns, get a bid on the amount of time your tattoo is going to take, and schedule an appointment time.
If you are discussing a custom piece, a drawing deposit is required to start the drawing. Drawing deposits are $100.00 and go toward the price of your tattoo.
We do take walk-ins if the time is available.

How do I care for my tattoo?
Leave bandage on for at least 12-24 hours (preferably 24 hours).
Wash your hands before caring for your tattoo.
After removing the bandage, wash your tattoo off in hot water (as hot as you can stand) for 15 minutes. Be sure to remove all particles of blood when washing.
Do NOT re-bandage your tattoo.
24 hours after washing your tattoo you may begin applying Tattoo Goo or Ink Balm. Be sure to thoroughly rub in lotion or balm. Do NOT cake it on.
Use lotion or salve 2-3 times daily, or as needed for 10 days, or until completely healed.
What not to do/use
Do not use any products containing alcohol, lanolin or petroleum.
No swimming, hot tubs, or nylons for 10-14 days, or until completely healed.
If your tattoo starts to itch, SLAP IT, DON’T SCRATCH IT. DON’T BE A SCAB PICKER!!
Once your tattoo is completely healed, use Color Guard or a high SPF sunscreen to protect your tattoo from the bleaching effects of the sun.
Should your tattoo need to be touched up, please contact your artist within 90 days.

Is it safe to get a tattoo or piercing?
For most people tattoos and piercings are safe, as long as each artist and the entire studio strictly adheres to universal precautions and Blood Borne Pathogen Safety. You can be assured that Painless Steel Tattoo requires each artist to hold client safety as the first and foremost priority. We have the highest level of sterilization possible and go above and beyond all local health codes and laws. We do have a consent/waiver form which identifies certain instances when it would not be appropriate for an individual to receive tattoo or piercing, but these are rare instances.
Does it hurt?
Yes it hurts. But, there are lots of people walking around with tattoos and piercings so it’s not unbearable. There are many sensations used to describe it depending on each person and what area is being worked on. Some people even like it!
Can I bring my own picture or drawing for my tattoo?
Yes. This tattoo will be on you permanently so we want to be sure you are totally happy. Bring anything you think might help to capture exactly what you’re looking for your tattoo to reflect. We also have plenty of reference books available for ideas. No matter whether you know exactly what you want or don’t have a clue, we will always work with you to design a custom piece of art that you will love.
It is our policy to collect a deposit when booking an appointment. We accept deposits via cash or debit/credit card and the amount of the deposit required is decided upon by the individual artist. If less than 24 notice is given for a cancellation, you lose your deposit and must leave another deposit if you wish to reschedule. If you cancel your appointment with more than 24 hours notice, you may apply your deposit towards your resheduled appointment. We NEVER under any circumstances will refund a deposit. We are sorry if this policy causes any inconvenience but is necessary to protect the interests of our artists.
Are there any special requirements to get tattooed or pierced?
You must be 18 years or older without parental consent for a tattoo or piercing due to local health rules and regulations. Piercings only may be done on minors depending on the piercing. Minors need a guardian or parent present with ID to sign a waiver. The minor must also have ID. If the parents last name differs from the minor we also require a birth certificate. The age to tattoo in our Missoula location is 16 with parental consent. We are strict in our requirements to ensure proper age and that valid legal parental consent is presented, so please call the studio at 406-728-1191 ahead of time to find out exactly what you will need to bring to your appointment. For any tattoo or piercing, you must present a valid drivers license or current state photo ID which by law must be photocopied. You (and your parent/ guardian if your a minor) must also read and sign a waiver/ consent form. Deposits are NEVER refundable. If less than 24 notice is given for a cancellation, you lose your deposit and must leave another deposit if you wish to reschedule. If you cancel your appointment with more than 24 hours notice, you may apply your deposit towards your resheduled appointment. We NEVER under any circumstances will refund a deposit. I have a tattoo that's really bad, can it be fixed?
Our artists can usually cover up or fix most tattoos-even really bad ones so you would never even know they were there. We are always honest though. If we don’t think it can be successfully covered we will let you know and work with you on what options you do have so you will ultimately be happy. We never do a tattoo just to make a buck. This is a really good group of artists who take tremendous pride in their work and art. Be assured that the artwork on your body and how you feel about it is a reflection on them – meaning your satisfaction is VERY important!
How long before I can get a tan and what kind of aftercare should I do?

Do you have have any other tips?
- Eat something at least 2 hours before your appointment. Low blood sugar can cause lightheadedness and dizziness.
- Try to stay away from alcohol the night before. Getting a tattoo when your hungover is not fun and it can also thin your blood.
- Good Hygiene. Take a nice and long shower the night before, as you won’t be able to do that for a while after the healing process starts.
- Don’t forget your ID! Montana state law requires us to take ID for any modifications including touch-ups.
